Cookies are surely one of the purest, least partisan foods out there. But when Oreo posted a Facebook photo of its iconic cookie filled with rainbow icing, the cookie entered the political arena. The image, posted on June 25th to commemorate the one-year anniversary of New York legalizing same-sex marriage, was taken to be Oreo’s endorsement of liberal ideals, understandably sparking a backlash from conservatives. Thousands of commenters called for a boycott of Nabisco, Oreo’s parent company. On the opposite end of the spectrum a petition emerged to convince Oreo to actually produce the rainbow-filled cookie. With the cookie brand becoming such a large part of the national conversation, Nabisco decided to make a recurring project out of their response to current events, becoming known as the Daily Twist. Understandably, they’ve stuck to topics with a broader, less political appeal, but with equally clever images: a red Oreo with track marks in it celebrated the Mars Rover’s landing in August and the day after Labor Day saw the Oreo without its iconic white filling because, of course, the fashion police dictate that we can’t wear white after Labor Day.
