NAMPA, Idaho (CBS2) —
Southwest District Health and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality are issuing a health advisory for Lake Lowell after testing showed high concentrations of cyanobacteria.
Health officials say the bacteria produce toxins that "can be harmful to people, pets, and livestock," according to a news release.
They are telling people to avoid swimming or wading in the lake.
Also, don't drink the water or use it for cooking. Boiling the water does not remove the toxins according to officials.
Health experts also recommend washing thoroughly, after contact with the water.
They also add that people with liver or kidney damage are more vulnerable to illness.
"Symptoms of cyanotoxin exposure include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing, and/or wheezing. More severe symptoms affecting the liver and nervous system may result from ingesting water," the release stated.
